The advantage of the laparoscopic adjustable band is that the band can be adjusted after surgery. We are able to either tighten or loosen the band depending on the patient’s requirements, which is a huge advantage in helping them to lose weight. Disadvantage of the Lap-Band is that while it is a safer procedure, the weight loss is not as great and there is a higher incidence of failure after the surgery. It is really what we call a 50-50 operation. People typically lose about 50% of their excess weight and about 50% of the patients succeed with the operation long term.
